The Queensland Firebirds have played out a thrilling 51-all draw against ANZ Premiership side the GoSweetSpot Mystics at Nissan Arena, with the visitors showing their composure at key moments to secure the result.
In a see-sawing Thursday night contest, the Mystics absorbed early pressure before responding strongly through the middle quarters, and a late two-point Super Shot ensured the match finished level.
After trailing 7-3 midway through the opening term, the Mystics lifted following the mid-quarter timeout. They tightened their defensive pressure and began converting more efficiently, working their way back within two goals before nailing a two-point Super Shot close to the siren to reduce the margin to just one at the first break.
That late long-range strike shifted momentum and kept the visitors well within reach despite the Firebirds’ fast start.
The Mystics built into the contest in the second quarter and hit the front for the first time midway through the term. Capitalising on turnovers and converting their opportunities, they quickly established a four-goal lead.
Although the Firebirds responded with back-to-back two-pointers, the Mystics steadied to take a one-goal advantage into the main break, underlining their ability to respond under scoreboard pressure.
In the third quarter, the Firebirds briefly created separation, but the Mystics stayed composed and kept themselves within striking distance heading into the final term.
The final quarter saw both teams trade the lead in a tense finish. With time winding down and the Firebirds narrowly ahead, the Mystics stepped up during the Super Shot period once again.
A clutch two-point shot in the dying seconds levelled the scores at 51-all, and although the Firebirds had one final opportunity, the Mystics’ late long-range conversion ultimately ensured the match ended in a draw.
The result highlighted the GoSweetSpot Mystics’ resilience and confidence from the two-point arc, particularly in high-pressure moments.
